Medecs BV is an IT company active in healthcare. We develop and sell active medical decision support systems. These IT-based alert and advice systems assist general practitioners, specialists, pharmacists and nursing staff during their day-to-day patient care. The base technology of Medecs is Gaston. Gaston is a suite of software components that are used to design and development of decision support systems. Gaston enables the support of care providers in their routine care towards their patients by means of advice (about the treatment) and alerts (if medical protocols or guidelines are not adhered to).

Why active decision support?

The quality of medical care has improved over the last couple of years through standards and guidelines. During the last decennium, studies have proven the benefits of clinical guidelines in the day-to-day care, such as decrease in variant in care and reduced costs of the patient care. However, there are a number of problems when these guidelines are developed and deployed in the routine care. An important problem is the fact that the guidelines are often in the form of (structured) text documents; which is a passive form of decision support. It is up to the care provider to decide whether it is necessary to consult the guidelines.

One way to increase the efficiency and acceptance of guidelines is to apply knowledge management technology in general and active decision support in particular, where guidelines are read and processed by a computer.

Why Gaston?

The Gaston framework is one of the few decision support systems that allows the care providers themselves to input and validate their medical guidelines and protocols. These guidelines ensure -possibly by fed by available patient records- support during the patient care by means of advice (about the treatment), alerts (if medical protocols or guidelines are not adhered to) and reporting.

This results in a state-of-the-art way of working by the care providers.
